Physical Exams Q & A

What is a physical exam?

A physical exam is a routine screening to ensure that you’re healthy and in good shape. Though certain components are common to all physical exams, Dr. Bireddy also offers a wide variety of specialized physicals that are tailored to your unique lifestyle, medical history, genetics, or age, like:

  • Wellness exams
  • Annual physical exams
  • Women’s health exams
  • Immigration physicals
  • School physicals
  • Pre-employment physicals

Physicals are also an excellent opportunity for getting vaccinations, blood work, and STD check-ups. They also provide a setting where you can have a conversation with Dr. Bireddy about any general medical questions or concerns you might have.

How often should I get a physical?

Certain physicals, like DOT exams, school physicals, and sports physicals, have their own particular schedule and calendar that you can consult. Otherwise, you should see Dr. Bireddy for a physical once a year. This allows him to see you often enough to ensure that you’re healthy and enables him to keep you healthy with good and dedicated preventive care.

What happens during my physical?

A typical physical exam has five major components:

Health history intake

You and Dr. Bireddy discuss your health history, including any changes or updates to your lifestyle. You should be prepared to answer questions about recent surgeries, allergies, supplements, medications, and the medical history of your family.

Vital signs assessment

Dr. Bireddy then checks your vital signs, including your:

  • Respiration rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Body temperature
  • Visual assessment

Dr. Bireddy also performs a visual examination of your body, looking at your:

  • Eyes
  • Head
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Musculoskeletal system
  • Nervous system functions

In his visual assessment, Dr. Bireddy looks for any indications of diseases or concerning conditions.

Physical testing

Dr. Bireddy then physically examines your body. He might:

  • Look in your throat
  • Listen to the functioning of your heart and lungs
  • “Palpate” or feel for abnormalities in particular spots of your body
  • Test your reflexes and motor functions

He also might perform neurological testing to assess your nerve functioning, balance, mental state, and muscle strength.

Laboratory tests

Finally, Dr. Bireddy takes blood samples for any laboratory tests he might think you need. Some of the things he might look for in your blood include your:

  • Blood sugar levels
  • Complete blood count
  • Lipid panel (cholesterol test)
  • Chemistry or complete metabolic panel

Depending on your health history and medical condition, he might also order additional tests, such as a urinalysis.
