Immunizations Q & A

What is immunization?

Immunization is the process of protecting a person against a particular disease or illness using a vaccine, which is typically injected into their system through a syringe. There are a wide variety of immunizations, each of which protects against a specific infection.

Medi Clinics Primary Care LLC offers a range of immunization services, including immunizations for patients of all ages, immunizations for immigration, and vaccinations for family care.

How do immunizations work?

Immunizations contain some form of the disease against which they’re intended to protect you, whether it’s a smaller amount of the offending virus or bacteria, a weakened form of the disease, or a lab-made protein that’s designed to imitate the virus.

When the vaccine is injected into your system, it triggers your immune system to fight it.

Your immune system then begins producing particular antibodies to fight that particular disease. Because the vaccine doesn’t contain a functional disease or enough of the disease to infect you, your immune system can easily eradicate it. In doing so, it learns exactly how to combat the disease, so that if you’re ever infected with it in the future, your immune system is already prepared to fight it.

You can think of immunizations as a sparring match in boxing. When you spar, you’re improving your skills in fighting your opponent without actually putting yourself at risk for serious harm or injury. After you’ve sparred, you’re more prepared for the real fight.

Immunizations prepare your system to fight particular infections, effectively helping to prevent the onset of particular diseases or generally reduce their severity.

Why should I get immunized?

It’s always easier on your system and more cost-effective to prevent you from getting diseases in the first place, rather than treating them once you’ve already been infected. Immunizations are a form of preventive care that not only improve your personal health and wellbeing but are actually beneficial for public health.

Over the course of their existence, immunizations have helped eradicate major epidemics of diseases that were once incredibly common, like whooping cough, mumps, and measles. They’ve also done a great deal to reduce the occurrence of other diseases, like smallpox and polio.

What are some of the more common immunizations?

Some of the more common immunizations include:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Rotavirus
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B
  • Pneumococcal
  • Poliovirus
  • Influenza
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
